Free eBook: Business Domain Names

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Since every website needs a name, Dr. Steve Baba has written a free ebook that will help you obtain a brandable, memorable domain name at a reasonable cost, which will contribute to your brand equity and profits. The ebook, downloadable from Seemly.com, explains how to select and buy an elite domain name. You will be able to obtain a better name than your competitors have.

There are at least 10,000 words in a dictionary that would make great domain names plus at least 10,000 proper names and 10,000 great short coined-words. With a supply of 30,000 great names and millions of good names, obtaining a good name is easy.

There is no need to pay more than a few thousand dollars for a great one-word domain name, and many good domain names are available for free. This book provides you with the information needed to beat domain name speculators at their games.

Both naming methodology to identify great domain names and negotiating/purchasing methods to obtain great domain names at low prices are covered. After a couple of introductory sections, the book starts with domain naming goals or the criteria for choosing a great domain name: image, memorability, trademark-legal, and price. Then quality domain naming strategies are discussed. Inferior domain naming styles, which you want to avoid, are then discussed.

The second half of this book explains how to buy a great domain name. Auctions, expired domains, speculators, and other sources are discussed. Finally, many other topics are expanded on.

Steve Baba has a Ph.D. in Economics and ebusiness experience. The ebook on domain names is available at www.seemly.com, for free. No registration is required. The ebook is a PDF file of approximately 250K. The free ebook is advertising supported. The following paragraphs are book excerpts. Generic names, arbitrary dictionary words, coined or made-up words, modified generic names (generic plus) and unrelated two-word names are quality domain naming strategies. But, each quality strategy has strengths and weaknesses. There is no such thing as a perfect name.

Generic names are highly controversial and expensive. Examples of generic names are Hotels.com, Shoes.com and Furniture.com. The generic name strategy was always controversial and peaked during the dotcom bubble.

The generic naming strategy is virtually never used offline, but a very few small stores do business under generic names such as the Mattress Store in Annapolis, Maryland. Offline, anyone can use the same generic name and open a store name Mattress Store. Online, ownership of the domain name MattressStore.com can only prevent competitors from using the same exact domain name.

Since, generic names cannot be trademarked, competitors can use Hotels.NET, Rooms.com, Hotelrooms.com, Motels.com, Hotel.com (singular), Inns.com Hotels.us, and so on. Often, there are a half dozen simple generic names for each industry not to mention generic names with a prefix (e, i) or suffix such as eHotels.com.

Since competitors can use similar generic names, developing a distinct, memorable brand is difficult. Memorability or the need to spend less on advertising is often an argument for high domain name prices but this argument is only half true. At the same time, with only a few first-rate generic names in each industry, the generic domain names may be unavailable or overpriced, and are rarely bargain-priced. A generic name also hampers brand extension beyond the generic category Hotels.com selling plane tickets?

Another quality strategy is unrelated, arbitrary dictionary words. Examples of unrelated dictionary word names include Amazon.com Yahoo.com, Google.com, Target and Staples. Both the words yahoo and google are in the Oxford dictionary, but were rarely used prior to becoming famous brands.

Compared to generic names, it was not immediately obvious what business Amazon, Yahoo or Google was in. On the other hand, Yahoo can legally prevent competitors from using similar names such as FreeHoo via trademark laws.

SearchEngine.com would be the generic name for Google. Fast and All The Web are used as trademarks by another search engine. But fast and all the web are not unrelated or arbitrary. Other search engines can also claim to be fast, speedy, quick, the entire web, or something similar.

The key to having the most trademark protection is to choose an unrelated, arbitrary word. Descriptive words, such as fast, are unlikely to earn much trademark protection. Instead of fast, it may be possible to use a suggestive name such as jet, rocket, or race.

With 10,000 good, short, easy-to-spell dictionary words, it is always possible to find one for a few thousand dollars. Shorter four or five character dictionary words are more expensive. Three character dictionary words are extremely expensive.

Coined or fanciful words are words such as Exxon or Kodak that had no prior use. In theory, coined words are the best from a trademark-legal point of view, since no one has used the word before. Ideally, a coined word is totally new and unrelated to any other word.

But, memorability requires a short name, which has led to a number of similar coined names such as Duron, Enron, and Micron, which diminishes the legal advantage, since confusion is possible. LexIs sued LexUs.

While the legal protection is not perfect, the legal protection is considered the strongest of any category. But from a marketing point of view since no one has used the word, coined words may be as difficult to remember as nonsense syllables.

With a supply of thousands if not tens of thousands of short, coined words, it is always possible to find one for a few thousand dollars or less often free.

Because of the lack of trademark protection for generic names, the lack of distinctiveness, and the cost of many generic domain names, many businesses have used a generic plus or modified generic naming strategy.

A prefix, suffix or second word can be added to the generic name. Examples of this are Carmax, CarMart, eCars, CarDepot, CarOne and CarLand.

This works if the generic word, such as car, is short. Longer generic names, such as CarpetCleaningMax.com, can be too long. But many of the longer generic words have common abbreviations. For example, computer is often abbreviated comp as in CompUSA. Software is often shortened to soft or ware in names. Tech is a common abbreviation for technology, overused in names.

These names range from virtually generic, eCars.cars, to nearly coined, QuanCars.com, with descriptive, suggestive and arbitrary second-words in-between. Since the generic word lacks any trademark protection, the trademark strength depends on the trademark strength of the plus part of the name.

The generic plus strategy is often an attempt to have the benefits from both a generic and a distinctive name, but may have the problems of both if one is not careful. At worst, it could infringe on someone’s trademark based on the second word such as CarsRus or CarBay. The generic part of the word is usually trademark safe.

Another strategy is to use two unrelated words in a name. Examples of two unrelated words are RedEnvelope.com and BlueTooth.com. The two unrelated words strategy differs from the generic-plus strategy in that neither word is related to the generic product. Technically red is related to envelope by being an adjective, but neither word is closely related to the product or service being sold.

The main advantage to this method, two unrelated words, is that its cheap and often free. With 30,000 single words, there are 900 million combinations of two single words (30,000 x 30,000).

The main disadvantage is that two unrelated words are twice as difficult to remember as one. Two words that are commonly related to each other such as happy birthday or hot wire are easier to remember, but rare and may be as expensive as single words.

From a trademark viewpoint, it could be twice as risky. It could infringe on someone’s trademark based on either the first or second word. If you are RedDog.com selling computers, either Red Computers or Dog Computers could consider trademark action against you.

A Few Things I’ve Learned About Doing Business On The Internet!

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

A few things Ive learned about doing business on the Internet!

Ive learned that there are more programs, and e-books available than I have money to purchase.

Ive learned that many, many of the programs and e-books are simply a rehash of another program, or e-book.

Ive learned that there are many different sites where by joining a program as a free member. Most, but not all of the e-books that Ive spent my money to purchase; can be downloaded for free.

Ive learned that some, not all of the e-books that can be purchased are a total waste of time.

Ive learned that it is possible to download so many e-books; that either they dont get read, or youll spend so much time reading them that you dont get anything else done.

Ive also learned that some of the ideas expressed in some of them are so important, that if you dont take the time to read them; youll be spending not only dollars, but time needlessly.

Ive learned: that you can spend so much time promoting so many different products; that none of the promotions get enough time to be successful. That shotgun marketing is a losing proposition.

Ive learned there are more Internet Gurus than I have time to study, and they got that way because they focused their energy.

Ive learned that no matter how attractive the next program, e-book appears; that you must narrow your vision to the one best program you have in your arsenal, and give it 100% of your energy if you expect to succeed.

Ive learned that without an opt-in list, youre dead.

And last, and most important: Ive learned; you must discover your niche, and work it until its a success

Avoiding Work At Home (Home Business) And Internet Scams – PartI

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Let’s say you drive for an hour to work during peak traffic hours. At work nobody appreciates your work. Still you have get up 5.30 AM in the morning. It is tempting to fall into the trap of Home Business scams. These scammers say exactly what you want to hear! Easy money, make six figure income easily, fire your boss, be your own boss, perfect home business opportunity etc. are the catch phrases. This is very tempting. The reason you’re interested in setting up a home business is because you’ve seen an ad somewhere, or you’ve been approached by someone. It was all about a great home-business-opportunity that promised you absolute freedom and you’re excited. Finally, you can quit your job! Don’t quit a job until you are actually making enough money to replace your income from your job. If you’re thinking of working from home under someone, though, you have to realize that at least 99% of the offers out there are scams – after all, if it was that easy to pay a few dollars and make thousands, why wouldn’t everyone be doing it by now? If something is too good to be true then it is. Here are the biggest scams out there, how to recognize them, and how to avoid them. Where did you see the Work from Home Ad? Where did you see that work from home offer? If you got it in the post, or by spam email, or saw it on a poster taped around a telephone pole, then I can guarantee you right now that it’s not a legitimate offer. If you saw the ad in a newspaper, in a jobs magazine or on a jobs website, then it’s a little more likely to be legit – but not much. Always check out any offer, and assume it’s a scam until you have iron-clad proof to the contrary. Check the company with Better Business Bureu. Check on the person who is offering the business opportunity. Envelope Stuffing. This is the most established work-from-home scam, and it’s been going for decades now. Basically, once you pay your money and sign up to work from home, you’re sent a set of envelopes and ads just like the one you responded to. You might make some money if someone responds to your ad, but eventually there just won’t be a market for it any more. Anyway, Work from Home offers like these are illegal pyramid schemes. You are never going to make any money putting letters in envelopes – forget about it. It takes less than 5 seconds to stuff a letter in an envelop. Why would someone pay $2 – $5 to you for doing this? Don’t you think there would be enough people doing this already if it were so easy? Why would people go to schools and colleges? They could just start stuffing envelops right at the age of 10 and make a lot of money. The best thing to do is to ignore such offers. Charging for Training Material/ Supplies etc. The practice of charging for training material/ supplies is hard to pin down to any one scam – it’s the way almost all work-at-home scams work (including the envelope stuffing). You’ll be asked to make a small ‘investment’ for whatever training materials (books, video/ audio tapes, CDs etc) would be needed to do the work – and then you’ll be sent some materials that aren’t worth anything like what you paid, and you’ll find that there’s no market for the work anyway. They would say things like your investment will returned when you receive your first check. It doesn’t look like you are going to make money on this and that’s why they are trying to make money from you by selling the training material. If any home business opportunity asks for money upfront – just go away. A legitimate company should be willing to deduct any ‘fees’ from your first pay check instead of asking for money upfront – if they won’t do that for you, then that’s because they don’t ever plan to pay you. Why do they say things like your investment will returned to you as soon as you make your first $200? Think about it. Working for Free. This type of scam is common with crafts. You might be asked to work at home making clothes, ornaments, jewelry or toys and games. Everything seems OK and legitimate – you’ve got the materials without paying out any money, and you’re doing the work. Unfortunately for you, when you send the work back, the company will tell you that it didn’t meet their quality standards, and will refuse to pay you. Then they’ll sell on what you made at a profit, and move on to trap the next person. Never do craft work from home unless you’re selling the items yourself. Note that you don’t need to be selling to consumers (you could be selling to wholesalers), but you still need to be the one deciding what you make and getting the money. There is more about Home business and internet scams in Part II.

Website Statistics with Cpanel

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

If you own one or more websites, it is vitally important to know how many people are visiting your site and where these visitors originate from. Analyzing website statistics should become a regular habit for every webmaster who wishes to improve website traffic over time. You’ll be able to test and track the popularity of your updated site content and even see how visitors find your site in the search engines.

There are many web statistics programs on the market, each one unique in price and features, but did you know that some of the best website statistic programs already come free with most web hosting plans?

If you have a hosting account for your website that includes cpanel, then you probably have a whole bunch of web statistic programs built in. Cpanel is by far the most popular control panel for web hosting accounts today. It is extremely easy to learn and use for regular website administration.

There are usually 3 different types of statistics you will find inside cpanel. These are known as Analog, Webalizer and Awstats.

Webalizer is a statistic program that shows you in a graph form how many visitors have visited your site month by month. This type of statistics is very basic and only takes a quick glance to receive your web site information. If you want more detailed information you will probably need to check out the other two statistic programs.

Analog and Awstats each offer different presentation styles. All the essential visitor information you probably wish to see is listed on Analog, but most people have difficulty finding it as it is primarily text based and requires close attention.

Awstats on the other hand, is usually the favorite web site statistic program on cpanel. Not only does it give you plenty of visitor information, from number of hits per day and month, it also tells you where they originate from, how long visitors stayed at your site, the country from which they are viewing your site, what browser they are using and much more. Basic colored graphs and simple to read layout make it a quick and easy task to find the information that you are looking for.

So if you have a website and would like to know more about your visitors check out your cpanel statistic programs inside your website hosting account. They can be extremely helpful in analyzing your site and drawing more traffic to it.

Top Ten Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Did you know the average American gains 5-7 pounds every year between Thanksgiving and New Years Day? That equates to ingesting at least 17,500 more calories than you burn on a daily basis during that time period. At a minimum, that equals nearly 500 extra calories per day on average over that stretch of days.

Usually, the added weight comes in fancy cookie trays or creatively decorated gift baskets from clients, friends and family. The sound of Christmas music and arrival of cold weather encourage us to partake of traditional holiday fare and simply move less. This combination leads to tighter fitting pants and feeling sluggish.

Now is the time to fight back! Dont wait to start your exercise program after the New Year begins. Initiate better exercise and eating habits now, because the weight is always harder to take off compared to preventing the gain beforehand. See the list below for tips on staying trim during this holiday season.

1. Perform strength training workouts at least 3 times per week.

2. Build in extra cardiovascular training if you decide to stray from your normal eating patterns to offset the extra calories.

3. Limit alcohol consumption as it will cloud your eating judgment and predisposes you to cravings and overeating.

4. Limit the number of holiday parties you attend.

5. Eat a small nutritious and fibrous snack prior to arriving at holiday parties. This way you will eat less because your stomach will feel full faster.

6. Do not buy holiday snacks for your house. If it is available, you will graze all day long without even noticing.

7. Plan events such as the Jingle Bell Run that keep you focused on training and exercise amidst the hustle and bustle.

8. Try to limit eating out when possible. With shopping, it becomes easy to dine out and partake in heavier foods and desserts.

9. Go to bed early or on time. Studies suggest that getting too little sleep will affect metabolism and prompt late night eating.

10. While at the mall, take additional time to walk after your shopping is finished.

What Should A Newbie ‘At Home Business’ Watch Out For!

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

There are a number of things a newbie should watch out for before starting a home business.

Both the do’s and the don’ts are as important aspects. Before joining a home business the person has to know what is required and what is a No-No. This clarity helps one have a better insight into the home business world. Better insight means better understanding of home business. And better understanding of home business leads to better decision making, better foresight and a more profitable and efficiently run home business.

Home business is known by many other names:

The first thing a newbie has to remember is that home business is known by many other names, but they all means the same thing. Home business. Phrases like home jobs, work at home, home based business, home business opportunity, work at home job and so on…

Types of home business

The second important thing is to be aware that there are many types of home businesses. There are a lot of choices available for those who want to do home business. You can take surveys online. You can set up a proper shop on the internet, and sell as many things online as you want. Your shop on the net is nothing but having a website of your own. Sell stuff through it, and earn commissions and profit on it.

Taking assignments or jobs like online editing, proof-reading, medical transcription or writing are also a part of home business. And people across the world are making money from it, working from the comfort of their homes. In these kinds of businesses, you are paid per assignment as per terms decided upon in advance.

Home business takes time to develop. Don’t expect overnight success: Home business is not a lottery. It takes time to develop Another important point to be keep in mind is that a home business takes time to develop. Its not an overnight thing, how much ever convenient to believe the ads on board may sound! One should give at least an year to ones home business to reach profitability. And then it keeps growing. The rate of growth is in your control. The more work in the right direction you put in the faster you grow. The right direction is nothing but a better understanding of home business and what goes into it, like I have mentioned earlier. I am just trying to re-emphasize the importance that. The potential of making money is unlimited in a home business. No doubts, arguments or debates. None.

Coming to the No-No part; Don’t believe ads or websites that claim home business success is an overnight thing. Nor that there is a software which puts your business completely on autopilot. Or that there is a home business that can double your money in 24 hours!! Even Google and Microsoft can’t double your money in 24 hours. And if they can’t, who can? Ask yourself.

  • Unusual home business: Another aspect which requires your own judgment based on your understanding of home business is that not all home businesses are free to join. Most affiliate programs are. But some charge a small fee which you have to accept as okay. For example an online survey website charges a small fee to give a list of survey companies you can register your profile with, who will send you surveys in your inbox and help you make money working from home. These Survey websites spend time and money to find out which companies are genuine, which have more surveys coming and which pay on time. Besides which suits and matches their visitor’s profile. You get so much on the platter, don’t crib about their fee!

There are some slightly unusual home businesses. Like website designing, website optimizing, writing eBooks, publishing eMgazines, starting out as a freelance photographer or opening a crche…. this type of info is charged. People with understanding and experience write these books so that your road to success is smooth and you save time, which again you have to pay for. Which website to subscribe to is your lookout and personal choice.

Keep this set of important lessons in mind if you are just starting out. Personal suggestion; start with an easy home business then gradually advance. If you directly taken up something as advanced like writing an emagazine without any exposure of the internet or the subject, it may not click. Don’t postpone to take that first step. And don’t give an excuse that you are being lazy. Nobody ever postpones anything out of laziness, the real reason is dis-interest. And if home business can’t interest or enthuse you, with its low or no investment, conveniences and money, what can?

Site Design…Or Site Disaster…What Do Your Visitors See???? So you got your own website now. Exciting isnt it? You’re ready to start putting your website to work for you. What will you do first? So many ideas going through your head…you want to make it the best website on the internet. You want to make it unique and different from anyone else’s. So many ideas popping in and out of your head you want to do so much. After all besides things in our home, when do we really get to design anything? Before we know it we have added a little of this and a little of that and maybe some more of this. It’s almost like waving a magic wand over everything giving it color and making it pretty. To us, our web site looks great we have color and we have animated graphics we also have a lot of content, after all that is what gets website recognition, isnt it? But wait, take a closer look, is all that content really necessary? We know google likes content but maybe some of us are confused as to which kind of content google is looking for. I admit, I once thought content is content. But I was very wrong, not all content is created equal. If your website is a business related site then your content should be business related as well. Your content should be interesting and helpful. Something you know your visitors would enjoy. Color and graphics is not useful content. Many websites have articles on their site. This is probably one of the best contents to have on your site. Most articles are interesting and provide useful information. What makes articles on your site even better? If they are your articles. Articles are not hard to write just pick a subject you are familiar with and write an article about it. Just remember to keep your article topics related to the type of site you have. Let’s talk color, is all that bright color really what our visitors want to see? Some colors are way too bright and can be sensitive to peoples’ eyes. If you need to have color make them more down to earth colors not something that is going to make your visitors want to run from your site. Not having any color is also good . Color is optional, just choose it wisely. Animated graphics, who is guilty of those? I know I am, and it’s understandable as they are cute and neat to look at. Or are they? Too many things flashing on your site is not appealing. Also, too many graphics will draw the attention away from what is really important – and that is your text. Your text is your message to your visitors. If you insist on having them on your site then I suggest just having maybe one. Make sure your visitor focuses more on your text, not the graphics. Another point to keep in mind is keyword rich text. You want to mention your keywords throughout your website. Every chance you get mention your keywords. Work them into your sentences. When writing articles make sure you add some of your keywords to your article title. This also helps your website get noticed by the SE (search engines). I write this article because I want everyone to learn from my mistakes. I am guilty of all of the above. It took a new computer to realize how loud my color was (old computer color looked dull) . After realizing how bright it was I panicked. It was like a slap in the face because I thought what an awful color and if I thought that of my own site what were my visitors thinking? I asked the advice of a good friend and thank god this friend is open and honest in her opinions. She helped me to take a step back and really look at my site. My only thoughts were, What have I been thinking? I dont even remember when or how my site got the point it did. I felt like I had this whole other life I knew nothing about and that person was taking over the designing of my site. But thanks to the new computer and my good friend, I have taken the control back of my site and since I have done so the visitors to my site have actually doubled and the length of the visit has also increased. I am back on the road to success.

Generating a positive ROI from PPC

    Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

Appearing on the first page of the major search engines for your key search terms is no doubt the best and cheapest way to drive relevant traffic to your site. However, if youve got a new site or are operating in a highly competitive sector where achieving decent rankings, pay per click advertising can also prove to be a cost effective way to generate visitors and customers.

So how do you go about generating a positive return from pay per click?

Keyword list the bigger the better
Target specific keywords that relate to your products rather than bidding on very general terms. These are unlikely to prove cost effective, as youll be up against players with very deep pockets. Large keyword lists can be built by using two, three or four word search term phrases. Use the search term suggestion tools below to generate a comprehensive list.

    Use search term suggestion tools
Not surprisingly, the best search term suggestion tools are provided by the companies that offer pay per click advertising. I use the suggestion tools offered by Google, Overture and Espotting. Merging these lists before submitting will ensure all keywords are submitted to the providers you choose.

    Listings for company name
Dont forget to bid on terms that include your company name and variations thereof. This is worthwhile for several reasons. It will ensure your site is in top position if someone does a search on your site name, the keyword is likely to be available for the minimum bid, thus generating a good return on investment, and it prevents competitors from achieving listings above or next to your listing.

Bid on lower value search terms
The search term suggestion tools rank the keywords on the number of searches they have received for them in the previous month. Always bid on those keywords that generate low levels of traffic, as they will often require a very low bid to ensure top position. Whilst the volume of traffic might be low, conversion is likely to be much higher than for the most popular phrases.

Get listings with the major pay per click providers
Use the pay per click providers mentioned above, as they will ensure the greatest coverage on the larger search engines. In the UK there is also Mirago and Webfinder that generate lower levels of traffic but a higher conversion rate.

    List on industry specific providers
You are also likely to find sites that are relevant to your sector that now offer pay per click rather than a paid listing advertisement. For my keyword travel insurance www.find.co.uk and www.uknetguide.co.uk have insurance specific sections where you can receive targeted visitors.

    Deep Linking
Make sure the link goes to the most relevant page on your site rather than just the homepage. Conversion is likely to increase as a result.

    Effective Titles and Descriptions
Write titles and descriptions specific to the product you are selling rather than just general, high-level terms. Also include a reason to buy e.g. any discount that you offer. Many of the ppc sites offer suggestions on how to do this so read these before submitting your adverts.

    Update your account
There will always be new search terms appearing relevant to your keywords. Review and update your account at least on a monthly basis to ensure your adverts appear for all keywords.
