The Key to the Perfect Wedding

February 17th, 2008

There are many answers to this question, it all depends on who you ask. We all dream about our perfect wedding but each of us may hold a different view of what makes it perfect.

The first thing to do when planning a wedding is to realize that nothing is ever going to be perfect, true perfection is unattainable. There is bound to be something that will not turn out quite as planned. But that is ok, you can still have a beautiful and memorable wedding!

We all have to remember that we cannot control everything and everyone, and we cannot be expected to. Yes, you want to try and be prepared for things, but don’t stress over it!

The best way to lessen stress in planning your wedding is to do it your way! Remember that your wedding is just that, YOUR wedding! Do what you and your groom want not what others think you should do.

If you have been dreaming of the big formal wedding with 400 guests and your groom shares this dream, (and you can afford it) go for it! But if you would prefer a more intimate event, by all means, do that! Just don’t do something only to please or impress someone else, do what makes YOU (and your groom) happy!

Work on making your day "perfect" for the two of you and not for anyone else, that is the best way to start planning for a "perfect" wedding and start a wonderful new life together!

Now once you and your groom have the concept thought out, talk with both sets of parents and come up with a budget to work from. Then go out and get started! It is never too early to start planning. The sooner you start, the less you will have to worry about the closer it gets to the big day. Make a wedding notebook and/or folder and pull pictures out of magazines (and look online for ideas too) of all the things you like and make notes about what you would like to have for your wedding.

Then start shopping locations, the best locations are those that can offer space for the ceremony and reception. Be weary of the "all inclusive" facility, though these places may save you money but they often have many restrictions. Wherever you decide to have your ceremony, just be sure they can give you what you want! After all, it is your day and you should be able to have it your way!

Once you have the venue, start shopping for your other vendor services. Many vendors will book an average of 6-9 months in advance of a date. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to find what you need and want and then you may end up having to settle or even pay more. The best money saving tip I can give you is just to give yourself plenty of time to find what you need and want and to get the best services at the best price.

"Having a background in many aspects of the wedding industry I have seen a lot of weddings and worked with a lot of vendors. I have seen mistakes some brides make in trying to save a few dollars. Model Train Scales

February 15th, 2008

When you get into model railroading, you quickly learn about model train scales. Every model train that is produced has a scale letter associated with it, such as: HO, O and so forth. The scale let’s you know how true to life it is and more importantly, the physical size of the train itself. The scale refers to the size in comparison with the real thing. For example, 1:220 means the real version of the model train is 220 times larger. If you are a newcomer to model trains, the amount of space will be the first factor in determining which scale to go with. For the hardcore model railroader, mixing scales is a great joy when space permits. Let’s take a look at some of the model train scales and minimum space requirements.

Z Scale trains are 1:220, which means they are very small. I call these “cute” trains and they are perfect for those with an extremely limited space. As with any scale, you can expand the layout as large as you want to go.

Next up is the N Scale, which is 1:160. N scale trains are semi-popular and are great if you want your focus to be on your layout and not the train itself. They are small as well, so you can fit these trains into minimal space.

HO Scale model trains are 1:87 and the most popular scale of model train with model railroaders. They offer a good level of detail and allow you to fit a nice size track into an average size space. I like HO scale trains because they blend in great with any type scenery and you get a good balance as a result.

The O Scales, my favorite, are 1:48 and very popular as well. Lionel has been making great O scale model trains for many decades. These model trains are larger and require a good amount of space for a proper layout. It is possible to setup a small oval track in about a 5-foot by 5-foot area. Although the track will seem small because of the train’s size, it is better than nothing. If your layout is smaller, the O scale train will dominate the view.

There are a couple other scales, such as S and G, but these are the main ones I choose to discuss in this article. Only you can decide which scale is right for you. Some, with limited space, prefer the O scale model trains, even though they dominate the layout, because of their detail and size. O scale trains are “meatier” and are really great for pacifying the children.

All trains have a variance in quality so one scale is not necessarily more expensive than another. Although, I have found O scale model life to be a little bit pricier. You really can’t go wrong with model railroading. It is highly rewarding and wholesome. In the end, you might find yourself collecting model trains across the entire scale spectrum. Get out there and ride the rails!

Valentine’s Day a Perfect Holiday for Gift Baskets

February 14th, 2008

Many people associate gift baskets with Christmas, Easter, housewarming or job promotions, and rightfully so. Gift baskets are wonderful gifts for these occasions and many others. Gift baskets also make a great gift for Valentine’s Day. With so many gift baskets available now for specialty gift giving, it’s no wonder people are starting to discover that Valentine’s Day is the perfect holiday for gift baskets. If ever there were a "bigger is better" holiday, it would have to be Valentine’s Day. A dozen red roses are nice, but three dozen red roses with baby’s breath and an ornate vase is something really special. For this reason alone, Valentine’s Day gift baskets take the cake, so to speak. Most Valentine’s Day gift baskets are available in several sizes and can be sent with flowers, balloons, teddy bears, or just about any other expression of love. Best of all, Valentine’s Day gift baskets aren’t just limited to chocolates, although chocolate is one of the most popular products for Valentine’s Day. >From luxury perfumes and spa products to gourmet foods and candies, there is no limit to the choices available when choosing a Valentine’s Day gift basket. Many gift basket retailers take great care to put together Valentine’s day gift baskets that are filled with products designed to make this very special holiday a memorable one. Take it from me, gourmet food gift baskets with flowers are an exceptional gift to send to your significant other at his or her workplace. Flowers always score points on the "love scale", especially in front of someone’s coworkers, but including a chocolate or gourmet food gift basket will be something the entire office can appreciate. There is no better way to turn them from envious to appreciative, and it will bring everybody by your loved one’s desk to stop and smell the roses.

A Man And His Car

February 13th, 2008

A man and his car, a man forms a special bond with his car, he learns to feel everything that the car is doing, he knows if a tire is low just by the feeling the car gives him, he feels the power of the engine as he shifts through the gears, his car becomes a part of him, and extension of his body and a creative out, he loves to put time it to his car and make it look and run better. He likes to make it go faster, he love how it makes him feel to drive it, a man will always enjoy bragging about his car and showing it off, he gets excited when events come to town where he and his car can join in, especially if it means that he could win a trophy, plaque or some other prize to show his car off. Men are car crazy, and if your not one of us then you’ll never understand why we’re that way, just roll with the punches and learn to love the car as much as the man does, cars give us men an outlet for our creative endeavors, and a way to enjoy being creative, a man can invite all his buddies over for the week end to help work on his car, and since their men they will be glad to help work on the car, all they need a some cold beer and pizza and their off and running. A guy loves everything about his car, and it doesn’t matter if the car is done yet, he will drive it half way done and be proud to do so, he was impressed when he bought the car, and he will still be impressed with it years from now, a man does not get sick of his car, he will spend his entire life trying to make it exactly what he wants, rather that happens to a custom car, or a factory prefect restoration his car will be what he wants. He doesn’t care, nor will he listen to any suggestion that would take him away from his car for any length of time, he doesn’t want to sell it to buy a newer car, a man loves his car to the very end, and though you might try, you will never change that, if the car bug gets in to a man’s blood, he will never get rid of it, it doesn’t matter how hard he tries, I know because I tried to shake it my self, and I know how hard it can be. I went to computer school, because I thought I was going to be getting out of the automotive business, and getting in to a business that made more money, boy was I wrong, I make a lot more doing what I know, and have fun doing it, I was bitten by the bug at age 12, and have never gone back yet, though I have tried to no avail. I still get all giddy just like a school girl every time a see a cool car, a car that I know a man has put a lot of time in, a car that is now a part of that man, a car that gives him freedom, his car will never scream at him, and it will always do what he likes, a man’s car will never let him down in any way. Form the out side looking in, you might think that the man has gone insane, but this is just a good sign that you have no idea what he likes, nor do you care, if you don’t understand, please have him help you learn, and maybe you can be a part of this very select number of people who go nuts at the sight of a pretty car. The only way that you could ever understand this, is to be a part of it, and once your in, you can never get out, so get ready to take it on.

Why Costa Rica?

February 12th, 2008

Someone recently asked me why anyone of sane mind would want to move to a third world country such as Costa Rica and actually plan to live there. I would like to share, and to document, the reasons for this to my fellow American citizens who may someday decide to pick up their roots and do the same.

One of the primary reasons Costa Rica was selected is because of the multitude of climates that you can select to live in. If you want to live by the ocean and the great beaches of Costa Rica where it is hot and the humidity is high, the Caribbean coast is the ideal location for you. If you desire to live near the ocean and more great beaches where it is hot but the humidity is significantly lower, then the upper Pacific coast is the place for you. If you like it better in the temperate zone between 65 and 75 degrees, the western central valley is beckoning to you. Drive 20 km north in the central valley and you may need a sweater by day and two blankets by night. The coastal areas are the only places where you may need air conditioning and then only occasionally. There are cooling breezes throughout the country.

Another major reason is the lower cost of living. Utilities such as electric, water, and phone rates are drastically reduced. Food costs are extremely low with most restaurant meals so inexpensive that dining out may cost only a few U.S. dollars. Housing in many parts of the country can be obtained for as little as $100.00 U.S. per month for an unfurnished home or apartment. The purchase of a three bedroom home in many locations can be found for $30,000 or less. There are many retirees who will vouch that they live very comfortably on a retirement income of less than $20,000 U.S. The Costa Rican people are found to be a gentle, non-violent, and considerate people. They believe in family and traditional social mores that many times appear to be lost in other countries. Costa Rica itself is a democratic country, does not have a standing Army, and relies on its police force to maintain law and order which they do very well.

Violent crime is almost unheard of in Costa Rica. There are occasional break-ins of vehicles, some purse snatchings, but these are not of the violent nature where firearms are used and human life is in danger as in many other countries. These mostly occur in or around the larger cities. In the country and smaller towns they are almost unheard of. Costa Rica is one of the safest countries to vacation or to retire in that can be found. Another very appealing fact to many is that foreign residents may purchase property in Costa Rica with many safeguards in place by the government. These may be used for vacation, investment, or retirement purposes. Property taxes are extremely low and there is a ready source of labor for domestic and other purposes in the country with maid and general labor costs of just over $1.00 U.S. per hour. Homes can be constructed by master builders for one fourth to one fifth the cost of a similar home in the U.S. I have not as yet mentioned the breathtaking scenery of the mountains, rainforests, wildlife, birds, waterfalls, fishing, sailing, boating, and the many wonderful tours that can be taken from the many good tour operators in Costa Rica which are outstanding.

I am sure that given the proper time, I could climb out of my hammock here on the terrace where a cool breeze is blowing, put down my drink, and think of many other reasons why someone would choose to live in the wonderful third world country of Costa rica. However, at this time I have overtaxed myself in my accounts of these wonders. As we say in Costa Rica, "if it does not get accomplished today, there is always manana". I hope I have answered some of the more basic questions of why anyone would move to Costa Rica. If you ever get tired of where you are living, and want to vacation or retire to the wonderful country of Costa Rica, there is always room for you in our beautiful adopted country. Pura Vida everyone.

Bob and Debby Stone are former residents of Naples, Florida, and are now residents of Costa Rica. You may visit them at their website which is at http://www.costaricapropertysa.com

Finding the best hotel deals

February 11th, 2008

When it comes to hotels, things boil down to a tradeoff between low cost and convenient location. In many cases, especially when traveling to major cities and popular attractions, the closer the hotel to the city or attraction the more you can expect to pay. The best way to save money, particularly in large cities, is often to stay in the suburbs. Of course, this means that you will spend more time getting to the places you want to visit, and this will mean spending additional money on gasoline, etc. It is important to compute all these costs to make sure that you will really be spending less on a less convenient hotel room. There are of course a number of ways to save money on hotels and motels without compromising quality. For one thing, a membership in AAA or a similar auto club also entitles you to discounts on hotel rooms, as does military service and senior citizen status. When inquiring about a hotel room, always inquire about discounts that may be available. In addition, shopping early for a hotel room can often yield the best deals. That is because hotels often reserve a block of low cost rooms, and when they are gone they are gone. Thus the last room at a hotel may be much more costly than the first. Getting the best hotel room deal is often a matter of timing. Of course getting a great deal on a hotel will mean nothing if the place is a dump. Shopping for a budget hotel should not mean settling for a hotel that is dirty, poorly run or in an unsafe location. Fortunately, finding a good budget hotel has been made much easier with the help of the internet. What used to take weeks or even months to research can now be done in a matter of hours or even minutes. Many hotels, even budget properties, feature pictures of the property and the surrounding area, so be sure to research the property you are considering if you have never stayed there before. It is important to research the area in which the hotel is located as well. Be sure to check out things like restaurants and attractions within walking distance of the hotel. Doing some research on the area will help ensure you do not end up staying in a dangerous neighborhood just to save a couple of bucks. The internet also provides a number of review sites where those who have stayed in various hotels share their experiences and their impressions of the hotel properties. These review sites can be very useful for travelers, particularly those traveling to a new location for the first time. In addition, the internet hosts a number of comparison web sites where travelers can easily find and compare hotel properties for their individual dates of stay and destinations. These web sites offer a number of ways to search, including distance from a particular tourist attraction, price, star level and more. The only caveat to consider when using such a web site is its independence. Some comparison web sites feature only properties that pay an advertising fee, so using a comparison site does not necessarily guarantee the best price. It is best to use a number of such web sites to get a true picture of the lowest prices available.

How to Promote Yourself Or Your Company Through Award Competitions

February 10th, 2008

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t receive some sort of announcement about an awards competition. We get so many, in fact, that I have created a special place on my website where you can learn about what opportunities are awaiting.

http://www.womeninpackaging.org/

With all the awards programs out there, how many of you incorporate that into your marketing plan? Yes, I know its a lot of work but the benefits you reap outweigh the effort invested. What can an award do for you besides making you feel good? For a start it can lend instant credibility to your or your company. Just think about the words "award winner." Doesn’t that sound important? Wouldn’t you like to see that phrase beside your name? Awards make a good visual to. If you are given permission, use the awards logo or banner in your promotional material or on your website.

So, how do you utilize the award and promote yourself in your marketing plan?

First you have to make sure you let others know about the recognition. Announce your award to the media, clients, prospects and employees. Write a press release both before and after the competition. Even if you don’t win you can showcase the competition in your material. Just making a commitment to submit is worthy of special notice. Receiving an award is a good way to get points from the boss. In fact even being a runner up or a nominee is fodder for self-promotion. For example, I received a full page promotion in a local magazine mailed to executives in Atlanta when I was a nominee for an award last year.

Second, dont set the award on the shelf. Use it to continually reinforce your success. Incorporate the award into your promotional material. You can add your award just like a certification to your business card and stationery too.

Third, use the competitions format a means for evaluation. Entering a competition can give you valuable independent feedback on your performance. Having an external judge review your efforts and provide feedback is worth the entry fee alone. Winning an award is an opportunity to prove to your customers and suppliers just how successful/creative you are. Remember this is an independent and prestigious endorsement of the quality of you and your company. It functions as well as testimonial

Finally, celebrate! Awards generate confidence and pride in employees throughout the company. Have a party to celebrate the accomplishment. You can use an award as a reason to hold a company event celebrating the accomplishment. Don’t forget to invite customers and potential customers.

Awards can open doors – to new suppliers, customers, investors and partners. Enter a competition and see how quickly you end with another great promotional opportunity.
